During my trip to Lapland in January 2013, I decided one morning to go snowboarding with two companions. Located 20 minutes from Harriniva is the piste Olos. I've had some indoor experience, but never did I board outdoor. The piste was only 700 m long, but had a steep descent (black). Thus, it was a hard effort to control my speed and not crash into the snow. Never did I ever thought to board above the arctic circle! On top of the piste, I've had a magnificant view. Het thermal suit that we recieved for the sneeuwmobiel excursion, came in handy! This day was a nice change during this trip and a good preparation for the snowboard week in april.
Val Thorens (France)
Val Thorens is part of the 3 Vallées area and is located near the Italian boarder. There is a lot to do in the village; many bars (even on the pistes), restaurants, shops,...
We stayed at Temples du Soleil. The rooms were big enough, but I wouldn't call it really clean! I was not entirely displeased, cause it took me only 2 minutes to walk from my bed to the piste.
The many elevators take you to different directions. After almost every elevator you can choose several runs. Although the fun park had a high difficulty grade, there were miles of piste for the free-riders. Every two days, all pistes had maintenance.
Overall, we had great weather, so this really adds up to the experience! On the second day, we ended up in a different area were we had to wait for the bus for 2 hours. How? We still don't know.
I would certainly recommend Val Thorens for any freeriding snowboarder or skier.
In 2014, I decided to go snowboarding in Italy. Alta Badia is part of the Dolomites in northern Italy. It was a short trip of 4 days snowboarding in one of the best slopes of the country. Unlike Val Thorens, there was a lot of variety in the mountain ranges. Some with trees, others only white hills, other with huge rocks. It has a good system of lifts that take you to different parts of the area. I stayed in hotel Post. An good hotel with friendly service! The food there was delicious. In general, the was the best snowboarding trip I've done so far! I'll certainly come back.
